The working behind the answer
How to use this calculator
Choose a dimension first, then the source and destination units. Each mode offers only compatible choices. Area conversion uses squared length factors rather than the length factor itself. Currency, temperature and density conversions are not included.
The formula
Length conversion
Result = quantity × source-unit factor ÷ target-unit factor
Area conversion
Result = quantity × source-unit factor ÷ target-unit factor
Weight conversion
Result = quantity × source-unit factor ÷ target-unit factor
Volume conversion
Result = quantity × source-unit factor ÷ target-unit factor
A worked example
100 centimetres equals 1 metre. One square metre is approximately 10.76391 square feet. One kilogram equals approximately 2.204623 pounds.
Good to know
Mass uses ordinary avoirdupois ounces rather than troy ounces. UK imperial gallons and US liquid gallons are separate options. Results are rounded to six decimal places for display, so very small values can display as zero.
Common questions
Can this convert kilograms to litres?
No. That requires the density of the material, not just a unit factor.
Are UK and US gallons interchangeable?
No. A UK imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres; a US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres.
