The working behind the answer

How to use this calculator

Choose equal shares for a straightforward split, or enter a name and positive weight for each person. Weight 2 means twice the share of weight 1. Enter a zero tip if none is needed. Check whether a service charge is already included in the bill before adding a tip.

The formula

Split equally

Total = bill × (1 + tip ÷ 100); shares divide the rounded total

Split by relative shares

Person’s share = rounded total × weight ÷ sum of weights, with leftover pennies allocated

A worked example

A £100 bill plus a 10% tip totals £110. Split three ways, two people pay £36.67 and one pays £36.66. The shares total exactly £110.

Good to know

Relative weights are not individual currency amounts. Money is rounded to pennies before allocation. For unequal shares, leftover pennies go to the largest fractional remainders; ties follow the entered row order.

Common questions

What if the bill does not divide evenly?

The result identifies who needs an extra penny, or allocates the extra pennies across weighted shares.

Is a service charge added?

No. Only the entered bill and tip percentage are used.
